About this project

The problem we solve:
On rounds, or in ordering systems or in the classroom, we all want to reference research values to make decisions and drive discussions. But finding these values is challenging. They are buried in research papers and can not be accessed fast enough to be useful. Our database liberates this data.

About our solution:
By using our central database to feed into apps, webpages, and electronic systems, this data can improve patient care by facilitating evidence based practice and education.
Progress to date: We've created a webpage and smartphone apps for android and iphone which deliver instant sensitivity and specificity values. We're ready to expand by integrating with electronic health systems to deliver these values to medical practitioners and with schools to create a Bayesian calculator that integrates with our data.

Bio: I'm originally from upstate New York. As a teenager, I joined the 173rd Airborne Brigade of the US Army. I served in Bosnia and Kosovo as a paratrooper. Getting my EMT certification in the military was my introduction to medicine. I later received my BA degree from Columbia University, and then my MD from Brown University's medical school. I'm currently finishing up my residency in emergency medicine in Albany, and looking forward to time mountain biking and whitewater kayaking.

How We Help Patients

Our innovation tells medical professionals exactly how good each test is for detecting each disease. By making this data immediately accessible in apps, webpages and electronic health systems, doctors will be able to order the most accurate testing for their patients. In reality, that means doctors will have a better chance of helping patient's while avoiding unnecessary and potentially harmful tests. Nobody wants their diagnosis missed, or to be needlessly exposed to radiation. Our system can be integrated into doctor's ordering systems so they know exactly when a test will be helpful. Our innovation also is a wonderful teaching tool. When doctor's round on patients and discuss their cases, they need data to help them make decisions. We have integrated our system into apps and webpages that allow useful data to be on hand during these discussions. Students use it to develop their skills in evidenced based medicine. Better students mean better doctors.

How We Help Education

Sensitivity and Specificity teaches students the fundamental ideas they need to practice evidence based medicine. Whenever a student orders a test, he or she should know how likely that test is to help them find a diagnosis. Our system teaches students how to deal with the numbers that will guide them through these decisions. It delivers sensitivity and specificity data directly through our apps and webpage. Soon it will be integrated with a Bayesian calculator, so that they can find the exact affect the test will have on their pretest probability. Our system will help teach students, and then they will continue to use these values, as we integrate our database with hospital electronic systems. This may be the breakthrough that will lead to a future of far more evidence based medical practice.

How We Help Physicians

Sensitivity and Specificity has created a database and delivery system that could greatly benefit medical practice. We can provide sensitivity and specificity values as doctors order tests. Doctors can see exactly how these values will change their pretest probability as they order combinations of tests and the patient's demographic data is collected from records. This is how evidence based medicine should work, and our system can deliver it to hospitals throughout the world.

Challenge Mission

Mission: Sensitivity and Specificity has the potential to create a bridge between research data and medical practice that will improve medical practice and education.
Use of funds: Funding would have a tremendous impact on our project. We need to build a Bayesian calculator that will automatically populate our sensitivity and specificity data. This will allow doctors and students to know exactly how useful tests will be in making an accurate diagnosis. Our webpage needs to be modernized. We need staff to reach out to hospitals so that we can integrate our data with their electronic medical records. We also need a social media campaign to encourage continued submissions of sensitivity and specificity data to our database. Of course, all of this data is verified by our team, after it is submitted through our website.
Intellectual Property Status: The intellectual property is owned by myself, Timothy Jolis, as the founder of the project.
FDA Status: We currently do not require FDA clearance.
Personal Message: My team has a strong belief that evidence based medicine means saving and improving lives. The Sensitivity and Specificity project has incredible potential to advance evidence based medicine. Research data is now static, trapped in articles that are difficult to access. We want to liberate this data and have it effortlessly integrated into all of our medical decision making.
