About this project
The problem we solve: Healthcare in the United States is changing quickly and medical education programs are also evolving to train the physicians of tomorrow. They have shifted to an outcome-based training model and each program is now responsible for showing data that they are graduating competent physicians. In 2013, the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) implemented the Next Accreditation System (NAS), which requires training programs to provide biannual data on the competencies of all the physicians in training. This accreditation model is now being adopted by osteopathic programs as well, under the Single Accreditation System (SAS). Similarly the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC) started collecting curriculum data from medical schools. This shift in education model has created a need for specialized software for managing and analyzing this data so that academic institutions can train high quality physicians while providing excellent patient care.
About our solution: Our solution is Medtrics, a cloud based Medical education management platform that simplifies the daily workflow in academic institutions. Medtrics was built for a modern competency based training model and supports real-time decision making. As an enterprise-level system, academic hospitals and universities subscribe to Medtrics for managing schedules, performance evaluations, competency management, as well as various administrative tasks - such as generating GME reimbursement reports for CMS. What makes Medtrics unique is our obsession with user experience. As insiders in medical education, we were able to design a platform that is intuitive, fully mobile, and allows users to get things done faster, with less clicks. Progress to date: Our accomplishments:
- Built an enterprise level platform capable of supporting the needs of large academic institutions
- Exhibited at 15+ medical education conferences across the United States
- Deployed and supported academic hospitals and community hospitals across the country, all of whom switched over to Medtrics from another platform.
The results of a recent survey of our clients show that after switching to Medtrics from their previous system, they experienced on average:
1. 75% increase in the quality of the feedback residents/students receive.
2. 80% increase in compliance (tasks being completed on time).
3. 60% increase in daily productivity for administrative users.

Medtrics directly improves patient care by helping academic hospitals train young physicians more effectively. For example, our mobile interface allows supervising physicians to provide important feedback to residents and fellows in real-time while interacting with patients. This direct, meaningful feedback improves educational and patient care outcomes. Clients report a 75% improvement in the quality of the feedback given to trainees after getting started with Medtrics. Additionally, our credentialing interface allows trainees to document their procedural skills, which can be accessed by nurses and other staff when a patient needs a procedure. This process helps ensure that patients are receiving the best care from individuals who are adequately trained to perform the procedure.
How We Help Education
Medtrics is an outcome-based learning management platform that integrates ACGME’s requirements and milestones for all specialties and subspecialties. The platform is also an official vendor for AAMC’s Curriculum Inventory Report. Modern medical education standards are combined with a beautifully designed, fully mobile interface, making Medtrics a tool that is loved by administration and faculty, as well as the trainees. Our mobile interface means less time dealing with administrative requirements and more time learning medicine. There is a 60% average improvement in daily productivity among administrators with Medtrics, to go along with an 80% average improvement in compliance.
How We Help Physicians
The tagline for Medtrics is “Learn Medicine, Not Software” because we designed the platform to fit into the busy lives of physicians. In academic hospitals, faculty and physicians-in-training must deal with various administrative tasks related to education while caring for patients. Medtrics simplifies schedules, duty hour rules, procedure logs, and performance evaluations, which results in happier physicians and patients. Additionally, Medtrics keeps all training data in one place making it easy to show one’s capabilities when starting a new career after training.
Mission: Medtrics Lab was founded by Santhosh (resident) who also designed the platform with direct input from Ravi (physician/residency program director) and Mel (physician/fellow). Use of funds: Funds from this grant will be used for two purposes: promote the technology to institutions across the country and to expand the capabilities of the platform. Medtrics is a product that has been in the market for over two years with various clients across the country. Current data from clients show that there is a significant improvement in the quality of the education and workflow after switching to Medtrics. We plan to spread the word about Medtrics through various academic conferences as well as other marketing strategies. This will not only grow our business but also impact the quality of the physicians in the United States.
Additionally, portions of the funds will be utilized to expand the platform based on the evolving needs of our clients. As a team, we strongly believe that a modern software platform is never "done". Just as the new accreditation models use a "continuous" process to learn and improve, we constantly improve Medtrics to improve user experience. Intellectual Property Status: Medtrics web and mobile applications were built entirely by our team and all IP is owned by Medtrics Lab LLC. FDA Status: Medtrics does not require FDA clearance. Personal Message: As we make efforts to improve the quality of the healthcare system in the United States, it is very important to focus on medical education as well. Training competent physicians for tomorrow requires creative solutions today. Join us in supporting the needs of academic institutions as they adapt and grow with the outcome-based training model.
