About this project

The problem we solve:
The susceptibility to falls is a major health threat facing the elderly, affecting one in three people aged 65 and older. Falls among the elderly lead to a loss of independence, particularly with activities of daily living (ADLs), thus reducing an individual’s sense of dignity. In a survey, 80% of older women preferred death to a hip fracture that would result in nursing home admission. Falls are the top reason individuals get admitted to nursing homes. The aging baby boomer population will further increase the demand for new technologies that prevent them from falling and allow them to maintain an active lifestyle. The number of American senior citizens is expected to increase from 44.7 million in 2013 to 98.2 million in 2016 (which is an increase from 14% to almost 25% of the US population). $34 billion is spent annually for medical costs directly related to fall injuries. Each fall injury results in approximately $18,000 in direct costs. There is an enormous need to prevent falls.
About our solution:
The patent-pending SurefootedTM Trainer apparatus creates slips using a 4 x 14 foot platform with a slippery surface for users while under the protection of a harness. The user wears low friction socks or shoe covers and walks back and forth along the slippery platform. During a session, the platform abruptly shifts to simulate slips. The latest research in fall prevention suggests that all cause falls can be reduced by over 50% for 12 months after a single session of slip simulation. Unfortunately, no slip simulator device is currently on the market. Surefooted LLC has invented the first training device that makes use of this ground-breaking science.
Progress to date: Surefooted is planning to partner with two universities in the Chicago area to do studies on the device, one of which will hopefully be funded by an SBIR or STTR grant. The objectives of these studies will be provide early patient and clinician feedback to allow for some finishing touches on the product and provide proof of efficacy.

How We Help Patients

The Surefooted Trainer reduces falls and improves gait stability by retraining users neuromuscular response to slipping and tripping. This is accomplished with dynamic gait training, which is the most effective way to simulate perturbations patients encounter in the real world. Reflex training is the key reason the Surefooted Trainer will be proven to achieve long-lasting benefits for patients from a single training session. Current treatments largely focus on strength training and require intensive patient involvement and costly physical therapist time. After a single session, patients leave surefooted for independent living where they might otherwise lose their balance and risk trauma injuries. Surefooted is redefining the standard of care in fall prevention.

How We Help Education

Data collected during a session with the Surefooted Trainer is uploaded to Surefooted’s servers for processing. The processing will be continually updated with information and lead to more breakthroughs about which patients are at highest risk for falls. Additionally, the future of medicine is value based rather than fee for service. In that environment, the Surefooted Trainer will have an even greater value proposition since it offers tremendous value in terms of preventing many falls and their corresponding injuries.

How We Help Physicians

The Surefooted Trainer automates the process for examining the patient’s gait while it is also providing neuromuscular training. Data about the patient’s gait is then processed at the end of the session and the processing also will be formatted for the physician resulting in better long term health for the patient.

Challenge Mission

Mission: The Surefooted Trainer will substantially reduce fall injuries. Fall injuries account for billions in health care expenses and they are also a very large contributor to patient loss of independence.
Use of funds: Fall prevention is underutilized in the healthcare management of geriatric patients. Much marketing is required to increase awareness of the benefits of medical equipment like the Surefooted Trainer can have on healthcare systems. We would spend a large portion of the winnings on increasing awareness that fall injuries are a huge problem and solutions exist that can manage the problem.
Intellectual Property Status: US Utility Patent Pending and PCT Patent application filed
FDA Status: The Surefooted Trainer will file with the FDA as a class I device within the next 12 months. Currently, it is being studied in IRB in at least 1 research setting.
Personal Message: We all have relatives we care deeply for who are looking forward to enjoying their golden years. Unfortunately, one bad fall can take away their independence and make those years less bright. Support Surefooted as we address this critical problem and try to get our device to market as soon as possible.
