About this project
The problem we solve: There is a lack of focus on using diet and lifestyle as a primary mode of treatment to prevent chronic disease. Doctors get trained to do what they get reimbursed to do; consequently, the average time spent in clinic today on nutrition and/or lifestyle counseling is 10 seconds. With half of the US population projected to be obese by 2030 and 1 in 3 US adults having pre-diabetes, its easy to see that drugs and surgery haven't been as effective as we thought at reversing chronic disease epidemic. The Healthcare of the future will be about behavioral change and quality of care; therefore, our idea will try to integrate Lifestyle Medicine and persuasive technology to create sustainable behavioral change to our growing chronic disease population. The average time to see a Primary Care physician today is roughly 2 weeks and up to 30 days to see a sub-specilist, and when chronic disease patients do see their doctors their is lack of focus on diet and lifestyle as a primary mode of treatment.
About our solution: We are looking to create a mobile platform, and after downloading the app you’ll get a free initial dietary and lifestyle assessment based on a mobile questionnaire and be given a “health grade” like we get in school (A,B,C,D etc)
Your “health grade” will identify unique diet & lifestyle strengths and weaknesses and you’ll be immediately connected with one of our Lifestyle-Focused Physicians at no cost to discuss health goals to help motivate you and make sure your reaching your goals!
Heres the catch: in order for users to continue having free instant access to a Lifestyle Medicine physicians, they will have to be made accountable, and what I mean by that is our platform will be performanced-based, meaning that as each user demonstrates healthy lifestyle choices —> they will be rewarded “health points” like we receive on our credit cards; therefore, the more “health points” they receive they will get to use the benefits of the app, one having free access to Lifestyle Physicians. Progress to date: We are currently looking to develop a prototype. We have graphic design skills and currently building an initial user interface draft and how it would look like on a web/mobile platform. Once we have our user interface designed we will develop the workflow of the app and how we want the experience to feel once people use the app. We hope to complete a mock draft of the mobile platform in 6-8 months, and once finished, we will begin looking for mobile app developers to take our idea on paper and turn it into a mobile app and test its traction and functionality.

How We Help Patients
It is not a surprise to hear that only 39% of US adults trust medical doctors to manage their health according to a recent Booz Allen Study. We understand people’s frustration with the current healthcare system, but our plan to create a "non-for-profit" organization reinforces our dedication towards better patient care by preventing disease. With chronic diseases on the rise, society’s high-cost, reactive, and disease-centered approach to medicine will be difficult to sustain, sending healthcare costs soaring. Our telehealth engagement platform will be designed to give patients instant access to their lifestyle medicine physicians to continue to support and counsel patients on reaching their health goals. With a “performance-based” platform it will keep patients accountable in order to continue having unprecedented free-instant access to Lifestyle Medicine Physicians to help reduce the chronic disease burden on patients.
How We Help Education
Across the board, from heart disease to diabetes, lifestyle modifications are the first line of therapy for the majority of chronic disease, yet this approach is often used inadequately if it is used at all. In addition, doctors are viewed by their patients as trustworthy sources in these lifestyle topics. Herein lies the root of a more pressing problem: most doctors lack an acceptable understanding of nutrition and exercise to confidently engage with due to the lack of it in current medical education curriculum.
Initially we hope to incorporate physicians who feel confident in their nutritional and exercise knowledge. However there is a great long-term opportunity to create low cost courses or CME credit to help medical students, residents and/or physicians to feel confident in these areas. The role of the physician is not only ideal but critical to being the paramount promoter of the importance of lifestyle in achieving and maintaining good health and treating early disease.
How We Help Physicians
With our telehealth mobile app idea, we hope to give physicians an extra tool when they feel diet and lifestyle are appropriate to the treatment of their patient’s chronic diseases. Physicians could also save time in their busy clinic schedule by referring them to our mobile app instead of attempting to counsel patients themselves. As a free app, our hope is to demonstrate results early to gather strong user interest and support from the medical community.
Mission: We hope by creating a telehealth platform focused on diet and lifestyle counseling we can also inspire medical students, residents, and physicians to pursue what their most passionate about. Use of funds: With majority of our idea being based off a mobile / internet based platform. Once we have completed the design and workflow of the product ourselves, we'd use part of the initial funding for coders to take our designs from our 2 Dimensional rendering, and turn them into a functional mobile product, eventually beta testing it to see how much traction it can grab. Also, it's vital that physicians be competent in areas of nutrition and exercise. Therefore, with any funding leftover we would use to create a "lifestyle" medicine curriculum to give physicals the necessary information to be part of our physician group. Intellectual Property Status: Currently we have do not have any copyrighted material registered and have only used non-copyrighted material in our presentation. Our idea is currently in the draft phase; therefore,no intellectual property has been granted to us. FDA Status: Our current healthcare idea does plan meet the telehealth HIPAA requirements, but currently no FDA clearance plan has been submitted.
Personal Message: The doctor of the future will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet and lifestyle for the prevention and reduction of chronic disease.
