About this project

The problem we solve:
As physicians we only have the capability to interact with our patients with chronic conditions every two to three months and only get snapshots of the patient’s health at distant points in time. However, physiological changes happen continuously and rapidly, especially when acute events are developing, and there is no good way to monitor these changes outside of the traditional office setting. The snapshots we currently receive often do not provide a true representation of health and lack context. Without the means to observe and analyze longitudinal patient data, we have limited ability to predict acute events or intervene at critical points to prevent hospitalization. Current remote monitoring programs require patients to use multiple medical devices on a daily basis. This is time consuming and challenging for chronically ill patients and may also result in data collection errors. As a result, compliance to these programs is low and data captured lacks accuracy and actionability.
About our solution:
The Echo Labs platform answers the need for continuous patient remote monitoring and actionable analytics in two ways. Our proprietary wearable wristband uses non-invasive optical sensors to capture cardiovascular and respiratory data directly from arterial signals of the patient. We continuously track heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, and a full blood gas panel (SPO2, PCO2, SPCO). This process requires no calibration or action from the patient, other than wearing the band. The band generates data streams continuously and reliably regardless of the patient's activity level. The data is then streamed to our analytics platform for tracking and analysis. We aggregate data to determine a patient’s baseline and monitor how their condition evolves, allowing our analytics engine to spot warning signs early enough for clinical intervention. These insights are delivered to the patient, physician and/or payer system to aid patient prioritization, diagnostics, and decision making.
Progress to date: We have the final version of our hardware prototype: a wearable wrist device with the final specifications of a patient-grade product (sensing, processing, data storage, charging, communication). We recently completed a 250-patient validation study aimed at generating more clinical data to fine-tune our algorithms as well as validate our technology versus gold standards (sphygmomanometer with two observers, Masimo Root system with ISA breath analysis and Rainbow blood gas analyzer). We have agreed to multiple research partnerships with Stanford Health Care, Scripps Translational Research Institute, University of Minnesota Medical School, and the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Palo Alto, CA. We are actively looking for additional partnerships. Finally, we have assembled an experienced team of leading researchers in clinical care transformation, biomedical engineering, signal processing, machine learning, and physics.

Separately, he spent two years as the head of systems engineering at SpaceIL, a space company competing in the Google Lunar X-Prize competition. How We Help Patients

We know that managing one or multiple chronic conditions is complicated and sometimes discouraging. We want to help patients with chronic conditions manage their health and avoid hospitalizations, without compromising their quality of life. Our product is simple, easy to use, and blends into the patient’s lifestyle. It requires no input from the patient but still provides the peace of mind of medical monitoring. Our data analysis capabilities ensure that small changes are detected in time to be addressed by the patient or their primary care physician thereby avoiding major health events down the road.

How We Help Physicians

Surveys of physician satisfaction have consistently found the doctor-patient relationship to be their greatest source of fulfillment. But current systems of care, especially around chronic condition management, too often require office visits to be limited to only minutes of face-to-face time during infrequent follow-up appointments. This is unsatisfying to all involved. By developing new systems of care around the EchoLabs technology the bulk of chronic condition management can be more efficiently, conveniently, and pragmatically accomplished by allowing for patient status to be monitored as part of their routine daily activities. Patient- and physician-friendly data analytic capabilities will keep the wearer informed and the physician’s care term alerted for individualized important, actionable changes in status. These new systems of care will allow physician visits to be opportunities to spend extended periods of time with our patients, serving as an educator and diagnostician.

Challenge Mission

Mission: We proudly are a science-first company with a vision to harness user-friendly innovative technologies to empower physicians and patients with the individualized information needed to maximize wellness
Use of funds: We have been working for nearly three years to build a groundbreaking wearable technology that is now reality. We finished a 250 patient clinical trial in May 2016 aimed at comparing the accuracy of our device vs. gold standards (e.g. sphygmomanometer with dual observers, blood gas analyzer, etc). The results showed equivalence to the standards and we are now planning wide population studies. We want to enroll several hundred patients with a specific chronic illness (COPD, CHF, CAD) to begin exploring how physicians and patients can best utilize our system in order to improve health and prevent hospitalizations. Usability by patients wearing the device, as well as the actionability of the continuous vital sign analysis by the care team, and the optimal communication of corrective actions will be evaluated using the funds available through the Challenge.
Intellectual Property Status: We currently have nine patents pending (four more are in preparation). These patents cover different aspects of our core technology.
FDA Status: We started working on our FDA clearance plan about two months ago with Mike Righter, regulatory consultant involved with AliveCor, Scanadu, and EKO Devices. We have identified predicate devices for each product code relevant to our technology and believe we can file different 510k’s for a Class II medical device. We are currently preparing a pre-submission package for the FDA to uncover any regulatory risk or issues in advance.
Personal Message: We are addressing the biggest paradox in modern medicine: care is based on isolated snapshots of health but the body is in constant evolution. Capturing these changes will provide deeper insight into a patient’s true state and offer predictive insights beyond what is currently available. We are already well on our way to making this a reality through our dedicated expert team, a wearable and fully functional prototype, and a completed clinical trial proving feasibility.
